  8. STEPHEN KING came to the Internet on Sunday, 19 Sep at 00.01,
  9. with "Umney's Last Case". This story, published on the Internet for
  10. the first time anywhere, is available from the Online BookStore,
  11. <OBS@EDITORIAL.COM>. The hardcover book will be published by Viking
  12. next month in the collection _Nightmares & Dreamscapes_--"Umney's
  13. Last Case" is his favorite story from the collection.

  15. Uniquely appropriate to the medium, the unease in this story preys on
  16. the imagination of this electronic age. Detective Umney lives in
  17. 1940s L.A., and his grasp on things begins to dissolve when the
  18. computer-wielding author begins to meddle in his life.

  20. This publication 
  21. constitutes a lot of firsts. King is publishing his short story at the 
  22. OBS for the first time anywhere (*before* it's published by 
  23. Viking/Penguin) - which generated mention in the Wall Street 
  24. Journal. The files are available in Everyman's Email ASCII, for those 
  25. who don't know how to FTP, and then in nicely formatted versions at two 
  26. sites: <OBS@TIC.COM> and <OBS@ALDEA.COM>. The Internet 
  27. Company has helped by
  28. constructing a nice order form people can telnet to and write their 
  29. credit card numbers on--to avoid sending credit card numbers over the 
  30. Net.

  32. The files at OBS@TIC.COM and OBS@ALDEA.COM are in Voyager Expanded Book
  33. format. The Voyager Company hasn't distributed its software titles over
  34. the Net before. With this Stephen King title, they are launching their
  35. PC line of Expanded Book software (it's only been for Macs before).  The
  36. Voyager versions of the King book are available only online at the OBS.
  37. In cooperation with Aldea Communications, Inc., Adobe Acrobat reader 
  38. software will be distributed over the Net, together with the OBS titles
  39. which Aldea is also formatting in Acrobat.
